Finding oneself encompassed in flames may seem like the immediate danger to a firefighter, though the damage is sometimes gradual. Natalie's research shows that firefighters have the greatest cardiovascular risks of any EMS personnel. Representing firefighters' experience are charcoal-drawn Polaroids and handmade newspapers of the many aspects of the job. And through the burnt mess, there's a heart, burn-free and safe from all the surrounding heat. It's as if water drenched the heart and saved it from the fire. Though the heart should be safe inside the body while the exterior takes injury, the heart is virtually exposed to the blaze.
